It’s human nature to compare ourselves to others. “That person has more money than I do. They’re skinnier, prettier, more successful. That person has it together. That person is way more organized than I am, more talented. That person has a better family life than I do, more love in their lives…” It goes on and on, the endless ways in which we compare ourselves, ultimately making us feel inferior and shamed.
There’s been one quote that’s almost completely annihilated this toxic practice for me, “Don’t compare your insides to somebody else’s outsides.” It was like, a light bulb went on in my head; it really connected. I was comparing my insides to other people’s outsides and as we know, outsides can be very deceptive.
Nobody can understand the depths of you; the deepest parts of your most authentic self. The stuff that makes you, uniquely YOU. The stuff that nobody sees, that only you live with. It’s what makes that person you’re comparing yourself to incomparable. It’s what makes that person just as flawed and vulnerable and human as you are but completely and utterly different, not better.
Do you find yourself comparing yourself to others often? I think it’s particularly easy to fall into that trap in the blogging world.
