Memorial Day Tribute

Happy Memorial Day, Friends, especially to those who have served our country. The Smooshy and I are reflecting upon all of those incredibly brave souls who have lost their lives in honor of our country and freedom. It’s because of these soldiers that I sit here today, typing behind my Mac computer, petting the velvety head of my Ru. It’s because of these soldiers that I’m able to dream big, which is worth more than I could ever put eloquently into words.

Thank you to all of the men and women in the armed services who have and continue to protect our diverse and abundant way of life. You’re doing a profoundly important job that a lot of us are not brave enough or strong enough to do. You’re doing a job that requires inner strength that cannot be fully understood by anyone who doesn’t walk your path.

Be safe, everyone and enjoy your day off.

Happy 1st Birthday, Canines & Couture!

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since Canines & Couture had it’s first post; it’s our first blogosphere birthday! I didn’t know what to expect when I started my blog and I certainly didn’t know a whole lot about the business of blogging. But a lot has happened in a year; I’ve learned a few things and I’ve worked really (really!) hard.

I took a PhotoShop and Illustrator class, increased content quality, spent countless hours learning the the ins and outs of social media outlets, networked with the sweetest, most talented fellow bloggers, grew my traffic, had some photo shoots, took lots of trips, and met lots and lots of amazing dogs… to name just few blogging highlights. And as I type this, I realize that I still have so much to learn.

I want to thank all of you who tune in every once and a while and check in on the Smoosh and I. We appreciate each and every one of your curious clicks, eager eyes, and thoughtful comments.

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my blog’s first birthday than heading to BlogPaws tonight (other than eating that delicious raspberry cupcake, of course) and exploring Washington, D.C. It’s going to be a fun 5 days.

Here’s to many, many more years of blissful blogging on Canines & Couture. We look forward to our continued journey.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you special Mom’s out there, including those who are Mommies to their beloved pets! I had the brilliant idea to create a post today featuring English Bulldog (Smooshy) Moms and their babies a few weeks ago and have since received some absolutely fantastic submissions from the Baggy Bulldogs community. They are quite a group and when I announced I wanted to do a post like this, the emails poured in with the cutest, smooshiest, most heartwarming photos of their English Bulldog moms and babies. It felt like Christmas opening all those emails.

I hope you are finding time to honor your moms today. If you are blessed – and it truly is a blessing – to have a loving mother in your life today, this very moment in time, do something lovely for her. It’s easy to take for granted that we have this steady, unconditional, rock-like relationship in our life because it’s been there day after day since birth but not everyone is as lucky; if you have a loving mother in your life, you’ve hit the jackpot and today should be a celebration and appreciation of the woman who gifted you those generous and monumental spoils.

My mom is the glue that holds our family together and I can’t imagine where I’d be without her. Hopefully, The Smoosh feels the same way about me. ;)

Unique Mother’s Day Gift Ideas from Harry Barker

I can’t believe it’s Monday already, Friends! What a weekend. Our trip to Scottsdale, AZ was fantastic. We learned a lot, ate delicious food, enjoyed the desert scenery and hot weather, went horse back riding, and explored the gorgeous grounds of The Phoenician. You can see some of the photos I took on Instagram. Unfortunately, I had virtually ZERO time to take some high-quality photos with my good camera. They kept us busy, busy.

Annnnywhooo, you know another thing I can’t believe? Mother’s Day is NEXT WEEKEND. I don’t know about you all but I like to research and find the perfect gift for my Mom, something really unique that she’d never suspect. As I was doing a little web searching on the matter, I came across a really unique gift idea for the ultimate dog lover mother. Harry Barker has the cutest eco-totes filled with doggie treat-treats. The tote alone is cute enough for gift giving; the fun dog products are just an added bonus! And honestly, what loyal dog owner couldn’t do without an abundant supply of cute poop baggies. I know I don’t leave the house without them. ;)

Happy Easter!

Rufus and I are spending time with the fam this lovely Sunday, preparing brunch at the moment. We had a delicious meal of lamb, scalloped potatoes, and asparagus last night, while also celebrating my father’s and my birthday with my brothers. We both walked away with some awesome birthday loot.

In other news, I tried to get Smooshy to fit into a normal Easter basket for our little photo shoot [above] but unfortunately, that big ol’ Smoosh of his doesn’t fit into just anything. I had to go with an Easter drawer! haha

The Easter holiday is just around the corner! Everyone’s favorite bunny will be making his rounds, delighting children across the world. This year the Easter Bunny got smart and enlisted help with his hefty work load from the Easter Pug! Easter Bunny and Easter Smoosh make such a cute duo, don’t they? I wish Easter Pug would have been around when I was a kid. ;)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I’m in the right spot for St. Patty’s Day! New Orleans knows how to do it right, naturally. People have already been up for hours drinking and roaming the streets of the French Quarter. The fam and I are planning on celebrating later and in the meantime, we’re checking out New Orleans’ famous Garden District.

I hope you are all out enjoying this lovely holiday, wearing your Sunday [green] best, drinking green beers, eating corn beef and cabbage, and generally having some good old-fashioned fun.

I’ve only seen a few pooches this morning, none of which were dressed up for St. Patrick’s Day. Hopefully that will change as the day goes on. If you happened to dress your pooch up in something green and festive, please do send us your photos. We’d love to see them and share them on Canines & Couture!

In honor of President’s Day (and my day off, yay!), I thought it would be suiting to share this adorable graphic about presidential pets by 1-800-PetMeds. How clever and fun, right?

Are you surprised that the number of dogs far out numbered cats in the White House? Or that Calvin Coolidge at one point owned a Pygmy Hippo?! Incidentally, if you want to learn more about why he owned a Pygmy Hippo, you can find the answer here.

Also, it doesn’t appear that the Smooshy breeds are well represented in the White House yet…what’s up with that? ;)

Pug Valentine’s Day Cards

The illustrator I worked with to create the Ru image in my banner reached out the other day just to tip me off to these clever Pug Valentine’s Day Cards by Etsy shop owner, AfricanGrey. They’re a unique, ADORABLE, and non-cheesy way of telling your loved ones they’re special. Extra bonus, they’re eco-friendly too!

My favorite is, “You make my tail wag so much, my butt hurts.” Hehe!
